The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him–except the town’s most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defense costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children. Starring Gregory Peck. Based on the novel by Harper Lee. (1960).

Map Day
Every day, maps tell us stories about the world around us, but most of us don’t give a second thought to how they are made, who makes them, or whether we should accept what they are trying to say. Freelance cartographer and University of Wisconsin–Madison honorary fellow Daniel Huffman will introduce you to mapmakers and what they do. Senior Graphics Editor Ginny Mason, will talk about the editorial process in making maps and graphics for National Geographic magazine. She will discuss research, design, and production for both print and digital media.

Whether you’re a seasoned meditator or just a beginner, join us for a meditation practice session on the second Wednesday of the month. Each session features an audio guided meditation, followed by silent meditation. Doors open at noon, close at 12:15, and the sessions last a total of about 35 minutes.

Learn the truth about the curse at the old Quaker Church, Judge Reddick’s contest with the Devil, and many other spooky tales.

Saturday Silver Screen Film Club

Meet the Author: Marian Szczepanski and Playing St. Barbara
Up-and-coming local writer Marian Szszpanski will read from Playing St. Barbara, a courageous story of a coal-miner’s wife, her three daughters and their uncanny connection to the 7th century legend of St. Barbara, patroness of miners. Copies of Playing St. Barbara will be available for purchase along with an opportunity for a book signing by the author.
Getting Connected: Google Docs I 2:30-4:00 pm
Take your Google experience to the next level with Google’s cloud tool, Google Docs. Google Docs allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating with other users live. This class will introduce you to the basics of using Google Docs and its multiple functions. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or solid mouse, keyboarding, and Windows experience.

Smithfield Critics Book Discussion Group
Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris
This is a wickedly funny, big-hearted novel about life in the office. The characters in Then We Came to the End cope with a business downturn in the time-honored way: through gossip, secret romance, elaborate pranks, and increasingly frequent coffee breaks. By day, they compete for the best office furniture left behind and try to make sense of the mysterious pro-bono ad campaign that is their only remaining “work.”

Children 18 months to 5 years and their parents or caregivers will get up and get moving at the Library with stories, songs, rhymes and silly fun. In these 30-40 minute Toddler and Preschooler Tales storytimes, children and adults will actively explore books that expand the imagination and inspire self-discovery.
