Time: 6:00 – 7:00pm
Cost: Free
Location: Carnegie Borough Municipal Building

Self-Defense for Seniors
Presented by David Holzer, Master of Shugo
Self-defense for seniors is NOT about the ways to body-slam someone to the pavement - far from it.
Instead, self-defense (or protection) starts with awareness of surroundings, a fearless presence, and an understanding of your capabilities.
In this session you will learn:

Simple steps to help you stay safe and out of Harm’s WayWITHOUT lifting a finger!
How to establish a presence and an Aura of Confidence that keeps Attackers at bay, and second guessing their actions with you
The secret Art of Deception And Disruption to fend off attackers If,
God-forbid, someone does enter your personal space
And much more!

About David Holzer:Born and raised in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, David has been training in the martial arts steadily for the past twenty-eight years. His interest in the martial arts has lead him to explore numerous combative arts across the globe and with many teachers. From boxing to kali, wing-chun to budo tailjustu, David has a very unique, eclectic view of the marital arts and shares his methodology with his students. David emphasizes the concept of “Shugo” which means protection and he is the founder of the Pittsburgh Combat Club - an all reality, all the time system of self-defense. “We do not train for sport or for exercise. We train so that we can, if called upon, defend ourselves, our family and/or those in need when under personal attack.” His objective is to truly teach others how to effectively protect themselves when confronted by an attacker.

Step by Step Guide for Buying a Used Car

June 02, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

By Anne Fleming
www.women-drivers.com

On an average, the price of car drops by as much 30%-40% in the very first year since its purchase. While this means bad news for people looking to sell their cars, it is quite the contrary for prospective buyers of used cars. By buying a used car, you will save money not only on the cost of the car but also on the insurance. Having said as much, looking for a used car is no child’s play as there are a number of factors that need to be considered. As a buyer, you will need to do your homework before and during the actual process of buying a used car.

Here is a step by step guide for buying a used car:

1. Choose the car you want according to your budget
Before you even start searching for a car, you must have a clear idea of a few things including your priorities, your expectation from a car and your budget. Be very sure of what you are looking for in a car – are your demands purely utilitarian or are you considering additional features or appearance etc. Depending on such concerns, narrow down your choice to 2-3 cars. At times, you might need to make some compromises according to your budget. It is important to understand that the most popular cars are usually more expensive than others which might offer the very same features. If you are willing to consider different options, you might find a better deal for yourself.

2. Gather information about the used car
Once you have narrowed down your options, you must try and gather all the information you can including details about warranty, safety and standard features. Also look for photos and reviews. You can use online resources like ISeeCars’s review section to get a compilation of professional reviews. It is imperative that you run a history check on the used car you want to buy. Using the VIN or the Vehicle Identification Number of the car, you can access complete vehicle history reports through websites like AutoCheck.com. In some cases, people roll back the odometer rating through a process known as clocking to impress prospective buyers. Alternatively, some cars are written off by insurance companies and people try to sell these off by getting some superficial repairs. A vehicle history check will alert you of any suspicious activities.
A vehicle history check becomes all the more relevant if you are buying an uncertified used car without any warranty provided by the original manufacturer. A certified used car, on the other hand, is deemed fit for sale by the manufacturers themselves and sometimes, it even comes with factory warranty. Finally, check the car for any signs of visible damage and be sure to take a lengthy test drive, to insure you are comfortable with all aspects of driving the car. Even ask family or friends to join you in the test drive; it’s that important!

3. Get the documents in order
Buying a used car involves a lot of paperwork, right from inspecting the original certificates to making new ones to indicate transfer of ownership. To begin with, you must ensure that the car is completely debt free by checking all documents related to financing. After this has been done, you will have to sign documents stating the transfer of ownership and the registration of the car in a new state or province, if necessary. As the golden rule goes, never drive a car without proper insurance. Soon after the transfer has been completed, a representative from an insurance agency will contact you regarding the car’s insurance. He or she will offer a variety of extended warranty options and you can choose according to your needs. Finally, a contract will be prepared which will contain details including the cost of the car, the registration fee, the license fee etc. Read through this document carefully before you sign it. This should be the final step before you get to hit the road with your new car.

4. Drive home in your ‘New-Used’ Vehicle!

How to Form Your Own Advisory Board

June 02, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

www.score.org

An advisory board is an informal group. This is not a board of directors. It is a group of mentors. The group has no financial interest in your firm. This is a group of outside advisors who share their knowledge to help you be more competitive, think strategically and offer specific advice in key skill areas.

First and foremost do NOT accept any member to an advisory board who is unwilling to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a non-compete agreement. Make it formal and clear in writing that these are confidential meetings.

The benefits of an advisory board include: setting aside time to think strategically, obtain feedback and insights from outside the company, and gather information and expertise from peers who have knowledge in different areas than your own.
In general, a three to five person board will likely meet your needs.

Advisory Board Attributes:

• Objective and honest.
• Knowledge and expertise outside your skill set.
• A genuine interest in helping you and your business succeed.
• Problem solvers who are good communicators.
• Diverse in skills, work and life backgrounds.
• Top or well-respected individuals in their field.
• Well-connected with networks that might be leveraged to assist you.

Legalities/Ground Rules:

• Require a non-disclosure and non-compete agreement.
• Set expectations for the time commitment you expect & duration of appointment.
• Provide a written invitation letter and spell out if there is an honorarium or not.
• Let each member know the specific type of assistance you hope to gain from him/her.
• Always provide a meeting agenda. This is your elite advisory team. Respect their time.
• Say thank you. This is mostly an honorary role. Express appreciation.

Advisory Board Value:
• Identify the result you want from engaging an advisory board.
• Ask yourself, how will my business be different in one year, because of this board?
• Think about the questions you want to ask your advisors. Prepare in advance of meetings.
• How often do I plan to rotate members? Is this ongoing or just a one-time board?

Indoor Air Pollution

June 02, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

www.womenforahealthyenvironment.org

How healthy is the air around you? Much of your overall health
can be improved by simply breathing better air and there are many
small things that you can do to help increase your air quality. Studies have shown that indoor air has higher levels of toxins and pollutants than outdoor air. Factors that contribute to poor indoor air quality include:

1. Poor ventilation – a major problem and said to cause half of all indoor air problems
2. Toxic fumes – emitted from products found around the home

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that “volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects.” EPA further indicates that concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. Products that contain VOCs include: paints, paint strippers, and other solvents; wood preservatives; aerosol sprays; cleansers and disinfectants; moth repellents and air fresheners; stored fuels and automotive products; hobby supplies; dry-cleaned clothing.
• What You Can Do to promote a healthy home:
• Open a window to help to reduce indoor toxins in the air and run exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen
• Choose non-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, stains and adhesives
• Eliminate smoking in the home
• Change your furnace/air conditioner filters every three months and vacuum carpets regularly (use a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum for a cleaner environment
• Purchase natural flooring and non-toxic wool carpets, allow newly purchased carpets to air before installation
• Select natural wood furniture – particle board or pressed wood products are known to contain formaldehyde
• Use natural cleaning products
• Check that combustion appliances such as stoves, fireplaces, furnaces are vented to the outside
• Avoid air fresheners and candles, instead opt for safer alternatives including fresh/dried flowers; spices such as cinnamon, clove, or orange; and essential oils such as lemon, eucalyptus, clary sage and rose
• Test for radon, asbestos and lead and install a carbon monoxide detector
• Add houseplants to decrease the amount of pollutants in the air and absorb harmful gases

ChallengeHER: Creating Procurement Access and Opportunity for Women-Owned Small Businesses

May 19, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

www.sba.org
by Marie Johns, SBA Deputy Administrator

Federal contracting with small businesses is a win-win. Every year, the U.S. government awards nearly $100 billion in federal contracts to small businesses, allowing these businesses to grow their revenues and create jobs right here at home. Meanwhile, the federal government gets the chance to work with some of the most responsive, innovative and nimble companies in the United States.

During the first three years of the Obama Administration, the federal government awarded $286.3 billion in federal contract dollars to small businesses—a $32 billion increase over the three preceding years, even as contracting spending overall has declined across the federal government.

Across the board, the Obama Administration and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are committed to providing access and removing barriers for small, minority, women-owned, and disadvantaged businesses by changing the process and the culture surrounding federal contracting.

We’re proud of our achievements so far in implementing the Woman Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program and we are making strides in bringing more women-owned firms into the federal government’s supply chain.

Today, I had the opportunity to announce our latest efforts to engage women-owned small businesses in the federal procurement process at the Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Opportunity Forum Luncheon presented by SBA, Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), and American Express OPEN, here in Washington, D.C.

The ChallengeHER Campaign is an exciting new initiative that leverages the resources of SBA, WIPP, and American Express OPEN to promote the Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program and bring more women-owned firms into the federal government’s supply chain.

In the coming months, we’ll be hosting ChallengeHER events across the country to help women business owners better understand the procurement opportunities available from the federal government, including events in:

•Phoenix, AZ;
•Seattle, WA;
•New Orleans, LA;
•Denver, CO;
•Atlanta, GA;
•San Francisco, CA; and,
•New York, NY.
At these events, we’ll also be playing “matchmaker”—connecting women-owned small businesses with the decision-makers and contract opportunities housed by our federal partners, both at the national level and in their local communities. And by increasing our family of women-owned small businesses, government contracting officers will have a broader base to consider when making their purchasing decisions.

We’ll also be training women-owned small businesses on how to register in our System for Award Management, which serves as our government contracting portal for all small business owners that want to do business with the federal government, and learn about eligibility requirements for the Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program, which allows contract set asides for women-owned small businesses in certain industries.

A robust supply chain of innovative small businesses makes our country more globally competitive, encourages more corporations to bring production back to the U.S., and helps create jobs here at home. Our goal, and the goal of the ChallengeHER Campaign, is to ensure that women-owned small businesses across the country have the access and opportunity they need to succeed.

Stay tuned for further information on the ChallengeHER Campaign and events near you.

SOCIAL SECURITY HONORS ALL WHO SERVE

May 19, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

By Patricia Thibault
Social Security Manager in Pittsburgh, PA

Every day of the year, Americans across the nation remember friends and family members who have served and sacrificed for their country.

Memorial Day is a day when we all come together to honor those who have given their lives in the defense of freedom and the principles we hold dear in this country.

May is also National Military Appreciation Month. As we observe Memorial Day and Military Appreciation Month, we would like to let members of our military know how much we value what they do for our nation. At Social Security, we offer a wide range of services for our service members.

Families of fallen military heroes may be eligible for Social Security survivors benefits. Learn more about Social Security survivors benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov/pgm/survivors.htm

For service members who return home with injuries, Social Security is here to help. Visit our Wounded Warriors website. You can find it at www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors. We use an expedited process for military service members who become disabled while on active military service, regardless of where the disability occurs.
The Wounded Warriors website answers a number of commonly asked questions, and shares other useful information about disability benefits, including how veterans can receive expedited processing of disability claims. It is important to note that benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application.

Even active duty military who continue to receive pay while in a hospital or on medical leave should consider applying for disability benefits if they are unable to work due to a disabling condition. Active duty status and receipt of military pay does not necessarily prevent payment of Social Security disability benefits. Receipt of military payments should never stop someone from applying for disability benefits from Social Security.

If you’ve served in the Armed Forces and you’re planning your retirement, you’ll want to read our publication, Military Service and Social Security at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10017.pdf

You also may want to visit the Military Service page of our Retirement Planner, available at www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/veterans.htm

At Social Security, we honor all those who served in the military and we remember those who died for their country.

Looking to Attract New Clients?

May 19, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

ByNancy J. Wintner, APR

Looking to attract new clients? Wondering how to be different so prospects buy from you rather than your competition?
Most businesses struggle daily with these questions. That’s why I’m going to reveal a simple, yet powerful secret to attracting new clients: give prospects the information they want.

You’re probably thinking, “I do this every day and have a list of satisfied clients to prove it.” Yet, despite a successful track record, you’re still not attracting many new clients. Could it be that your marketing addresses what you think is important rather than what prospects want?
Many companies focus on self-promotion stressing the features and methodologies of their offerings. As a busy decision maker, will this entice you to change the status quo? Or, is your bottom line, what’s in it for me?

Consider this. When a new client comes aboard, you put his/her interests first. You work hard to provide quality service and products to ensure customer satisfaction. Consequently, repeat business rolls in the door. Apply this client-centric philosophy to prospecting and you’ll stand out from the competition. Believe it or not, most businesses don’t put prospects’ interests first and wonder why their marketing fails.

Ready to attract more clients? Here are nine tips to growing a more profitable business in 2013:

1.Understand Your Target Market. Who is your ideal client? How do you find this individual? What motivates this person to buy? Correct and effective targeting is the most important element to attracting new clients.

2.Create a Compelling Message. In this age of information overload, you must immediately stop prospects in their tracks. Wow overburdened decision makers with a memorable message that speaks their language, targets their specific audience and addresses prospects’ needs.

3.Make Prospects #1 in All Marketing Endeavors. This includes ads, letters, websites, marketing materials, networking, conversations, even business cards. Demonstrate that you understand prospects’ challenges and unveil your solution(s) to their obstacles.

4.Demonstrate Value. Prospects won’t change unless they understand your value and how it’s significantly better than their status quo. Instead of self-promotion, show how you can improve customers’ lives and make a difference.

5.Educate Prospects, Don’t Sell. Prospects run when they sense a sales pitch is coming. An education-based approach builds trust, credibility and relationships. Helpful information, not hype, will attract new clients.

6.Give Prospects A Reason to Buy Today. Explain the consequences of waiting. Prospects don’t buy because they understand. They buy because they feel understood.

7.Showcase A Proven Track Record. Use testimonials and case studies to attract your ideal client. These are more credible than self-promotion and prove you grasp prospects’ issues.

8.Create and Initiate Referral Plans. Understand referrals from the clients’ point of view. Educate and motivate clients to become raving fans.

9.Create memorable experiences to exceed clients’ expectations.

Is Your Marketing Plan Working? If not, put prospects’ interests first and you’ll see results. A carefully calculated plan can boost sales and increase profits.
Ready to triumph over your competition? Put these tips into action, and prospects will reward you with their business.

HAPPINESS IN SELVI’S HOUSE

April 28, 2013 By: admin Category: Consumer Education

www.water.org
Selvi is 37 years old and lives in Karattai Village in Vannur block, in Tamil Nadu. She and her husband work as agricultural laborers and have two daughters in school.
In her village, she is also a member of the Saraswathi Self-Help group where she has a savings account, which provides a small loan back to her for household expenses. Selvi says, “I never miss my group meeting. I attended many training programs conducted by Hand in Hand.” She further adds, “I came to know that there is a WatSan loan product for the construction of individual water connections. I enrolled myself for the loan.”
Selvi is happy that she could learn about health and hygiene and understand the importance of safe drinking water, water borne diseases, the importance of toilet construction and the need to have water and toilet connection in her own house.
Water.org’s partner, Hand in Hand, gave a water loan to Selvi to help her install a water connection for her household. Selvi recalls the days when she had to get up early in the morning and go to the street for water collection. She says, “Sometimes due to a heavy rush, I was not able to get water on time and my daughters were not able to get to school.” Now, after getting the individual water connection, Selvi is able to save time. She says, “This is a great help for poor villagers like us.”
Join us for World water Day www.water.org
and celebrate the progress being made for families like Selvi’s.
